China Delegates Net $44 Million
In Local Contracts

NEWARK - A Chinese delegation will leave the city with more than
844 million in contracts from corporate partnerships with Bay Area
entrepreneurs.
At a Friday seminar, three little-know Bay Area companies-Memsic
Inc., Golden Gate State Holding Group Corp. and NorBan Co. - agreed
to form business partnerships with the city of Wuxi.
The Chinese government usually requires companies to partner with
local firms before they can do business in the country.
"The economy of China is developing healthily and rapidly
while the development of the world economy has been slowing down."
Said Xiao Ping Mao, vice mayor of Wuxi, through a translator.
The official from the coastal city in northern China spoke to a
crowd of more than 100 Bay Area business people at the Newark-Fremont
Hilton.
He pointed out that China's gross domestic product - the total
value of a country's production - is growing at a greater rate than
the rest of the world. China entered the World Trade Organization
this year and US government has pledged to further open its economy
to foreign investment.
About two or three trade delegations from China come to the Tri-City
area every year, said Fremont Mayor Gus Morrison, who attended event,
organized by the Wuxi visitors.
Events like these are important because there are no borders in
the world today," Morrison said. "You have to deal directly
with brains now, not boundaries."
General Electric Co., Eastman Kodak Co. and 39 other Fortune 500
companies have offices in Wuxi (pronounced woo-zee). The city of
4.3 million is about one-hour north of Shanghai, Mainland China's
largest trading center.
Tao Luo, a Union City-based saleswoman for Chinese software from
USSP, said Wuxi is mostly known for its tourism but has changed
its culture to attract more businesses.
"Wuxi has a very distinctive Asian beauty." Said the
saleswoman, who has traveled there several times." Now, Wuxi
is focused on high-tech businesses and attracts companies that want
to be close to Shanghai but can't afford to locate there."
Fremont coucilmember Steven Cho also attended the Wuxi event as
a warmup for his trade mission to China in August with several other
Fremont city officials, including Morrison.
"The government is still involved in a lot of business in
China." Cho said, "Our talks with them help open possibilities
for Fremont companies to do business in China Face-to-face meetings
are so important for us."
